JoinOrigin docs

Origin is the product: a social collaboration network and community OS. JoinOrigin is the brand and the network behind it. These docs explain the core objects, the roadmap, and the architecture.

Architecture & standards

The social graph is the product: every object hangs off the network of people and their relationships. Communication uses the open Matrix protocol (decentralized, E2EE), and your network graph and connections persist forever, so your relationships stay portable.

Origin is built with React, TypeScript, and Next.js on the web, and NestJS, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Docker in the backend. What stays open is the protocol (Matrix), your data, and the source code under AGPL-3.0.

Frequently asked questions

What is JoinOrigin built on?

React, TypeScript, and Next.js on the web; NestJS, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Docker in the backend. Communication runs on the open Matrix protocol.

What is Matrix?

Matrix is an open, decentralized communication protocol with end-to-end encryption. Origin runs on it, so conversations — and the network graph behind them — are portable and persist forever.

What is live now?

The Community Foundation (Phase 1) is live: profiles, communities, chat, and the social graph are already in use by 2,400+ builders.

Concepts

Profiles

Profiles are the portable identity of every member — like a living resume. They carry experience, skills, ideas, reputation, and relationships across every community and project, so who you are travels with you.

Communities

Communities are groups of people who share interests, industries, goals, and opportunities — around any idea. They are the center of engagement on Origin and the way members find each other.

Ideas

Every idea gets a home. Post an idea page for anything — a small business, an AI startup, helping the homeless, a 10k run, a book club, a pee-wee league — and find the people who want to build it with you.

Communication

Communication happens in a Matrix room — real-time chat, direct messages, and group discussions. It runs on the open Matrix protocol, so conversations are portable and can be end-to-end encrypted.

Feed

Posts, updates, and opportunities from the people and communities you follow — a calm stream of what matters in your network.

Projects

Projects are collaborative efforts where members work together toward a shared outcome. They connect the social graph to real work inside and across communities.

Companies

Companies are ventures formed by members of the network. They bring team management and opportunity sharing into the same workspace where the relationships live.

Opportunities

Opportunities are jobs, partnerships, and investments surfaced through the social graph. The network matches the right opportunity to the right person at the right time.

Roadmap

Phase 1 — Community Foundation

Profiles, communities, chat, and the social graph. Success metric: members forming durable communities.

Phase 2 — Collaboration

Projects, shared workspaces, and tools that turn conversations into joint work. Success metric: communities shipping outcomes together.

Phase 3 — Organization

Companies and ventures formed by members, with team management and governance. Success metric: companies founded inside the network.

Find your people. Build together.
